The Big Reveal
The mystery hidden for centuries: everyone's invited. No walls. No exceptions.
A mystery hidden for ages
Paul couldn’t stop talking about something he called “the mystery.” Not a puzzle or a riddle — something that was hidden for centuries and then revealed.
“The mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” — Colossians 1:26-27
So what’s the mystery? It’s this: everyone is invited in.
The wall came down
For thousands of years, there was a dividing line. Jews on one side, everybody else (Gentiles) on the other. The Jews had the law, the temple, the promises. Everyone else was on the outside looking in.
Then Jesus came and demolished the wall.
“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” — Ephesians 2:14
Not “lowered the wall.” Not “put a door in the wall.” Destroyed it. The division between insider and outsider, between “worthy” and “unworthy,” between “us” and “them” — gone.
“His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace.” — Ephesians 2:15
One new humanity. Not Jews who accept Gentiles. Not Gentiles who become Jews. Something entirely new. Everyone equal. Everyone included. Everyone receiving the same life from the same Source.
Why this matters now
You might think, “OK, Jewish/Gentile thing, that’s ancient history.” But the principle is massive and it still applies.
Every wall that divides people — race, nationality, class, status, in-crowd vs. outcasts — Jesus destroyed it. Not in theory. In reality.
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” — Galatians 3:28
This doesn’t erase differences. It says differences no longer determine value. In Christ, the popular kid and the invisible kid have the same access, the same standing, the same worth.
If your church or community doesn’t look like this, it’s not because the gospel failed. It’s because people haven’t caught up to the gospel yet.
The household, the temple, the bride
Paul uses three images to describe what God is building with this one new humanity:
A household:
“You are… members of his household.” — Ephesians 2:19
You’re family. Not guests. Not visitors. Permanently in.
A temple:
“In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” — Ephesians 2:21-22
God doesn’t live in buildings anymore. He lives in people — specifically, in the community of people connected to Christ. You’re a living stone in a living temple.
A bride:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” — Ephesians 5:25
The church isn’t an organization. It’s a bride being prepared for a wedding. Christ loves the church the way a bridegroom loves his bride — with total devotion, sacrifice, and delight.
What this means for you
The mystery reveals something about God’s heart: He’s not building an exclusive club. He’s building a family where everyone belongs. Where every wall is down. Where every person has the same access to the same Father through the same Spirit.
“For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” — Ephesians 2:18
One Spirit. One access. No VIP section. No dress code. No prerequisites except faith.
And this family has a mission.
